HYPERLOOPTT INTERIOR CAPSULE DESIGN AND EXPERIENCE

Re-envisioning Inter-City Travel

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies’ mission is to re-imagine the experience of inter-city travel. With an eye towards future mass-production, it was important to create an innovative solution that would also be feasible. The interior was developed with high levels of technical constraints as well as careful consideration for accessibility and differently-abled passengers.

The design team collaborated to build and visualize the complete 3D data along with the partial mockup shown at Shanghai’s Import Expo (CIIE) show in 2021. The process included multiple rounds of VR validation review to ensure valid ergonomics and comfort in a compact space.

Designed To Calm

Designing an environment to calm those riding within a confined, windowless space presented a unique challenge. The surfacing is round, friendly, and comfortable. A large frosted transparent canopy encircles the cabin, moving one’s eye through the cabin in a way that increases perceived space. Indirect, warm ambient light is meant to soothe the senses, with a day and night mode to coordinate with the natural lighting outdoors.

An Inclusive Experience

The layout presents an interchangeable modular approach with a zig-zag layout and a social area that creates an open space. The artificial skylight features daytime and nighttime modes and gives the feeling of natural lighting. Digital wayfinding leads passengers through the cabin with personal luggage compartments, a snack bar, and a lavatory, and includes accommodations and thoughtful consideration for assisted travelers.

One of the most unique features of the interior is the social zone in the center of the cabin which allows for a shared experience. Adapted for a larger travel group, the open space lets passengers connect, socialize, or relax. The two benches can accommodate up to 6 passengers and also serves as a transition to divide the capsule into smaller units for a more pleasant ambience.

Built and Exhibited

This design is more than just a concept, it is being built. HyperloopTT unveiled a five-meter section of the cabin interior and a virtual reality experience. For the very first time, people were able to see and feel what it will be like to sit inside a HyperloopTT passenger capsule.
